If Your Child or Student ...

Step 1: Re✓erseFixUp: help your student to see the lines that make up letters especially if they tend to reverse their letters, often printing them backwards or upsidedown. The student copies a pattern from one set of dots to an adjacent blank set of dots. I can't stress enough how important these ReverseFixUp dot patterns are to the creating of a successful reader. (samples of Re✓erseFixUps)
Step 2: Alphabet Letters: recognizing the letters of the alphabet is best done by having the student print the letters as they learn them
- use Language Arts alphabet tracing worksheets
- use Language Arts alphabet matching worksheets
- use Writing word picture tracing worksheets
Go to the Reading Section Index.
Step 3: Decoding Words: for PreBeginners are rhyming words
- the first column has three-letter words
- have the student highlight the two rhyming letters (eg., at), this will help them read the three-lettered words in the first list (eg., cat, hat, pat)
- the second column has four-letter words that are created from the three-letter words in the first column
- have the student highlight the small three-letter word found inside the four-letter word (eg., bat, cat, hat), this will help them read the four-letter words (eg., scat, chat, spat)
Step 4: Reading Booklets for PreBeginners use easy to read short words
- there are simple reading booklets designed to go with the decoding word lists
- these booklets have words that beginning readers can actually read
- students can have fun coloring the pages or adding stickers as they read them
Step 5: Writing worksheets: for PreBeginners
- writing word missing letter and missing vowel picture worksheets have the student trace the given letters and fill-in the missing letter
- writing word unscramble and fill-in the blank picture worksheets have the student print words that match the pictures
- Language Arts rhyming words worksheets have the student write rhyming words
See the Reading Skills section for more information.
Step 6: Reading Comprehension worksheets: for PreBeginners
- these have short paragraphs with simple reading words
- the questions require the student to simply fill-in the blank
- start with the PreBeginner's reading comprehension worksheets that end by having the student draw a picture
- when they are ready have them do the PreBeginner's reading comprehension worksheets that end by having the student write a sentence
(samples of Reading Comprehension worksheets for PreBeginner's)

- Decoding words: for Beginners (grades 1-3), Intermediates (grades 4-6) and Advanced students (grades 7 & up)
- there are two columns of words that use a common two lettered sound
- using different colored highlighters, have the student highlight the small words found inside the larger word
This is an effective method that works in a relatively short period of time.

- Step 1: Paragraph Writing Rules:
- by giving the student a formula or rules for writing a paragraph, you remove all the frustration
- using Rule 5 will make any paragraph sound wonderful
(To help support this site, I have restricted this to paid members only.) - these have a reading at the top for the student to practice reading out loud
- they should use the highlighter method if they come across an unfamiliar word
- the questions should be answered using a complete sentence
- using complete sentences accomplish two objectives
- it is more impressive
- these sentences can now be used when studying for a test
- the student writes a paragraph about the topic using the Paragraph Writing Rules
See the Reading Skills section for more information.
Step 2: Reading Comprehension worksheets: for Beginners, Intermediates and Advanced students
See the Reading Skills section for more information.

- Step 1: Use strategies for teaching adding and subtracting to PreBeginners
- teach your student to add and subtract by using the math additon stars worksheets. Use stars as aids for counting on or counting backwards.
- for adding and subtracting from 1 to 4, use the points on the numbers to add or subtract. Paid members try our count-up or count-down math worksheets. The student should touch the top number with their pencil saying the name of the number as they touch it and then count up or down as they touch the 'points' of the lower number.
- Paid members read Math Facts Series Overview worksheet for an explanation of how to use the Math Facts worksheets. Math Facts worksheets:this is a series of 35 worksheets that take a student thru a progression of steps to teach them their math facts using a variety of techniques
- Paid members can use strategically designed Math Fact Practice Intermediate worksheets for daily practice
See the Math Skills section for more information.
Step 2: Give the student 'tools' for learning math facts. Memorizing math facts, as a teaching strategy, is an inefficient system for struggling students. It is better to give them strategies, eg., the math ladder, regrouping, using related facts, etc. Check out teaching addition and subtraction worksheets or go to our Math Skills Section Index for more ideas and information.
See the Math Skills section for more information.

- Step 1: Teach multiplying as a system, eg., times 4 is a double plus a double. (Paid members check out the Math multiply how to information worksheet.)
See the Math Skills section for more information.
Step 2: Teach dividing as a system, eg., divided by 4 cut the number in half twice. (Paid members check out the Math division how to information worksheet.)
See the Math Skills section for more information.
Step 3: Math Fact Practice Advanced worksheets for daily multiplying and dividing practice
See the Math Skills section for more information.
because the parent doesn't have the time or the child prefers to work alone:
- Print out math or language arts worksheet with the answers and let your child correct their own work (giving them a red pen or gold star stickers for marking.)
- Use a tape recorder and record spelling words. You or your child can record the list of spelling words (remember to group them) and then your child can correct their own work.
