Adding 6s, 7s and 8s
Three methods are often used to solve plus six, plus seven and plus eight math facts:
- The first way a student can solve an adding problem is the simply count up. This method is slow and often involves using fingers which doesn't look 'cute' after kindergarten.
- The second method is to regroup. They are actually rearranging the numbers. For example, 9+6 can be reorganized by taking one from the 6 and giving to the 9. You now have 10+5 which is easier to solve.
- The final way is to use a math fact close to the fact that is known and use it to solve the problem. 6+5 become 5+5 plus 1. A student should always use a fact that they already know to solve a problem they don't know.
