Can They Read Grade Level Words?

Find out what their reading level is. Can they read at all?

Use decoding instead of phonetics to teach reading. Decoding trains the eye to look for small words within big words so reading loses the 'fear factor.' Students that can speak English know the words, so they know how they are pronounced. They just have to be given a clue to decode the mystery that is a combination of letters that make up a word.

I have had grade three students that couldn't read the word 'cat'. They progressed quite quickly by using the decoding word lists and the reading booklets.
