Percentages

Power over Percentages

Percent means part of 100. Percent (%) is a ratio (fraction) where the bottom number is 100.
eg., Mary got 80% on her test. She got 80 out of 100 answers right.
80% is 80/100.

Percentages include:

  • simple interest
  • mark-ups
  • mark-downs

The easiest way to handle simple percentages is to use two fractions and 'cross-multiply' them.

eg., Cross multiply and divide to find 12% of 50,
- we know that 12% is 12/100 of 50
- which can also be written as
   12    =   ?
 100        50
- Then to find ?, we cross multiply: 12 × 50 = 600,
- and then divide by the other number: 600 ÷ 100 = 6
so 12% of 50 is 6.
