Money

Learning about money involves:

  • Recognizing coins and bills.
  • Learning the names of coins.
  • Adding dimes.
    requires counting by tens
  • Adding nickels.
    requires counting by fives
  • Adding quarters.
This will be useful when they come to learning about fractions.
  • Adding in a logical order.
Add the quarters first, then the dimes and nickels, and finally the pennies.
  • Understanding money symbols and their positioning.
The dollar sign goes in front of the number and there are always two decimal places. The cent symbol follows the number and is used when the value is less than a dollar.
  • Understanding decimals.
A decimal is needed when writing dollar amounts. They also need to understand how to add and subtract decimals when dealing with math word problems involving money .
