Decimals

Dealing with Decimals

Decimals involved in adding, subtracting and dividing are kept lined up.
It is important for the students to keep their numbers in perfect columns to be successful. If a student is having difficulty then use large sized graph paper to lay out their math problems.

Decimals involving multiplying is more fun.
Just ignore the decimal until after they solve the answer, then count the total number of decimal places in the two multiplication numbers and use that total number of decimal places in the answer.
eg. 2.25 (2 decimal places) x 3.1 (1 decimal place) = 6.975 (3 decimal places)

See the Metric section for a simple method for converting metric units.
eg., kilometers into centimeters.
